The car insurance here is eye watering. I got online quotes from a bunch of companies last night for what an Evo X would look like on my own policy and I’ve come to the conclusion I’d rather walk with a half full bank account than drive with an empty one.
Apparently where I live in Jersey doesn’t help either. I’m in Bloomfield (17) and in between Montclair (9), Clifton (18), and Newark (30).

So how much annually? Ballpark?

They gave me monthly quotes. Progressive was the cheapest at $470.85 a month, Stae Farm was $740.36, Geico was $768 and Liberty Mutual was $983.50

You’re how old looking for insurance on an Evo X? If anything the insurance companies in New Jersey are smart.

I’d be 22 by the time I can get the lease. They’re incredibly smart honestly because I can’t count the number of kids in fast cars here, but in my defense I have a clean record

Monthly?!?! Holy crap. I pay $100 a month as a 27 year old with a viper. That's crazy man.

I just paid 470 for 6 months with my Legacy GT which is pretty much an Evo X for adults.

I’m 22, owned a newish WRX since 18 and my insurance is 95$ a month full coverage in Texas. It’s no evo x but damn

I’m packing my bags now and moving

Insurance companies here would laugh and put the phone down if I asked for a quote on an evo before I hit 25. You’re lucky they even gave you a price.

Great state for Gearheads. No salt, great roads, cops are nice, and great cars are everywhere

You have a few points on your record, or is Jersey just that nuts with insurance? I have never paid too much over $600/semi-annually in PA. (WRX, STi, E46M3, E90 M3, S3).
![]() 11/09/2015 at 09:53 |

My record is clean. I just happen to be a 21 year old male (22 by the time I could get the car) who isn’t in school

Can’t compare PA prices to NJ/NY prices, hell I know people who have all their cars registered in PA just to save on insurance.

But usually those kids are using daddy’s car.

That is still nuts. I was almost 20 when I bought the WRX, 21 when I bought the STi, 22 when I bought the E46. Then I stopped buying cars for almost 7 years. I can’t remember what I paid to insure the STi, but I remember a significant decrease when I traded the STi for the E46.

Yea wow, I just did some googling and it appears that NJ is #2 most expensive for car insurance right behind DC. I could never live there just based on car insurance lol.

welcome to car guy Hell :D

That’s the problem though - you’re 22, so you don’t get an “in my defense”. 22yo + 300hp AWD sports car = high premiums. It sucks, but they’ve been burned before.

Wow, those quotes are cringe worthy. I’m about to start paying $120 for full coverage on a 2016 GTi and liability for my E30. I should count my blessings.

A ~$38,000 car + 21 year old driver + some of the most congested roads in the world = high insurance. Get used to it.
That’s my exit, 151 off the Parkway. Bought my first new car when I was 20, a VW GTI. Found out after the fact that my insurance payments were more than my car payment. It was my first and last new car. Get older, buy used cars, and keep a high deductible. Or try to stay on your parents policy.

Greetings neighbor!
Technically it’s 30..but yeah I knew the insurance quotes were coming, I was just too busy hiding under my bed with my middle fingers pointed at them to accept it.

After the GTI was stolen (in Belleville, which inexplicably is not on the insurance list) I bought a used black Integra GS. Great car, but I still missed the VW.

I believe Belleville got looked over for that list

LOL. I mean, I’m sorry. My wife and I pay $800-something... per YEAR for THREE cars. None are EvoX or STi, but still. WTF Jersey?

I’m moving

I’m in the same boat. JUST liability for the Trooper I just got is $55 a month for a 22 year old suv. I have a clean record.

Jeebus! I have GEICO, which continues to be substantially lower for us than anything else. I’m in Passaic, in the nether regions of your graph. I got a quote on an S2000, which I think was about $189/mo to add to our policy with moderate liability/coll/comp coverage, and quite a bit more than an ND Miata ($165) or GT86, or my Mk4 Jetta.
I think the S2000 is supposed to be one of the most expensive cars to insure. Excelsior!

Geico wanted me to hand over my soul for car insurance :(

When I first got my own in insurance in NJ, All State wanted $5000 per year on my Scion tC. In three years i would have paid them more than I bought the car for.
1. If you’re eligible for NJM, look into it.
2. Your biggest issue is your location (apart from NJ) and the fact that Evos get stolen, all.the.time. And since your location is known for stolen cars (lived in Newark for 3 years, sold my cars before moving for these exact reasons) it’s compounding for these ludicrous prices.
So some advice.
Come check out central Jersey if you want to stay close enough to family. Hillsborough/Bridgewater/Somerville rent is actually not bad (comparatively) and it will cut your car premiums by a shit-ton.
Next, consider leaving NJ. It sucks, but if nothing is holding you here and jobs can be found elsewhere, it’s much easier to get started in life in places elsewhere.

Reason #957 why I want to get the hell out of this state. There's only one thing really keeping me here, and that's the fact that I am waiting till I can sell my house and get the 20% out of it for the next one so no PMI. PA or DE here I come. Until 30 years from now when I retire and move south like I want to do now.

I live a street up from clifton to be exact, a good 5 miles from Newark. My job is down in Summit and have been playing with the idea of moving further south. Ill check into NJM

Then your best bet would be to be in the Stirling/Greenbrook/Warren area. Your commute would be a only 10-15 miles. If you want to have fun mountain roads, Martinsville (~17 mile commute).

Do you have AAA? the insurance isn’t that bad but the payment system is archaic. I’m paying 226 a month for two vehicles (the e38 and a truck).
![]() 11/09/2015 at 13:16 |

GEICO wanted me to bend over for having no credit. If you have a credit history, then they are affordable.

Wait until you hit 25 before looking at a performance car if you want affordable insurance.
once I hit 25 the insurance was pretty cheap. I had full coverage on a $50+K Challenger SRT8 of $121/month

Thats the entire “9 year” thing right? I got my license at 17, thanks NJ...so it’d be 26 then if my maths are correct
![]() 11/09/2015 at 13:25 |

I don’t know how it works in your area. But here in Canada it was just because at 25 they now consider you a “responsible” adult. I got my license at 17 too and it dropped by half the year I turned 25.

$240 a month for my 11 year old DeVille LOL
